It is the combination of thought and love which forms the irresistible force of the law of attraction.
Charles Hannel, author of ‘Master Key System‘ and one of the pioneers of the LOA concept
We are debating the validity of the Law of Attraction (LOA) in this series and have so far established the following-
- The LOA has been in existence since time immemorial and is the cause of very creation of life.
- Millions of people, including incredibly successful ones, have benefitted from the LOA. Conversely, millions are living a life of lack, poverty and unhappiness due to the LOA.
- At the basic level all the living and non-living things are created out of the same “building blocks.” The living beings are vitalised by energy (soul, consciousness, Atma, or many other names) which makes the matter envelopments, Body, Mind and Intellect (BMI), function to maintain life.
- The thoughts that we create are nothing but energy in motion, which is a mix of electro-magnetic and biochemical energy. The longer we hold a thought, the deeper is the “memory channel” and the more automatic that thought and the resultant emotion becomes.
- All the matter that we see around is nothing but energy in motion. This pulsating, vibrating energy has some peculiar characteristics which give rise to the LOA.
Since everything inside of us, including our thoughts, and around us is continuously vibrating, it has the property to make another “thing” vibrate at the same frequency, if the two come close to each other or their frequencies match. It is quite like the experiment of a “Tuning Fork” which we used to do in our schools. To give a real-world example, the lasers are produced when the photons of the same power and frequency “sync up” due to the LOA. Since our thoughts are also electromagnetic energy, they too vibrate at a particular frequency. Incidentally, the frequency of our “thoughts” is not constant and ranges from 0.1 Hz to 100 Hz, depending upon our “state of mind.” These neural oscillations are the ones picked up by the Electroencephalogram or EEG. The mind, through these different frequency vibrational thoughts, is capable of achieving widely different outcomes which are as under.
- 0.1 to 0.3 Hz; Detached awareness and healing sleep.
- 4 to 7 Hz; Meditation, intuition, memory.
- 8 to 15 Hz; Relaxation, visualisation, creativity.
- 16 to 30 Hz; Alertness, concentration, cognition.
- 31 to 100 Hz; Insight, peak focus, expanded consciousness.
As you can make out, for critical thinking and innovation, our mind has to work at a different level as compared to when we are relaxing. When we are in intense thought, involvement and focus towards any task, we find new ideas emerging. The scientific explanation is our being in a state of Beta or Gamma at that time. As a corollary, if we are immersed in a task or job which is to our liking, we give it our all. This passion excites our minds to operate at higher frequencies which results in success in our endeavours. Conversely, when we are in a repetitive and mundane job or a job which is not to our liking, it is very difficult to generate thoughts which aid in innovative thinking. Incredibly, this scientific fact was understood by Napoleon Hill way back in the 1920s, when it was not empirically proven, and mentioned in his book – Think and Grow Rich. Let’s revisit the principle number 12 out of his 13 “success principles.”
The Brain – The brain has to be kept vibrating at high vibrations through creative visualisation and passion. This aids in the germination of ideas by the alliance of both the minds – conscious and subconscious. Well, talk of geniuses – Napoleon Hill was certainly one of them.
Here I would like to focus your attention towards the Alpha brain waves, a state of mind where true creativity takes place. We all have noticed that many a time when we are wracking our brains to find solutions to a complex problem, nothing comes to the forefront. But, sometimes later, when we are engaged in some other activity or in a relaxed sleepy state, the solution emerges like a flash. It appears that when the issue is kept on the ‘Back Burner’ the solution is easy to find. This is the power of our subconscious mind which is active 24*7 and finding solutions to a problem even when our conscious mind is engaged elsewhere or sleeping or relaxing. We will discuss this phenomenon in forthcoming posts.
The next issue up for debate is whether these ‘thought waves’ have the power to move in and out of our minds because without this property there can’t be any LOA. I have a pet, a sweet Golden Retriever named Cookie who is very attached to me. When I am about to return home after a day’s work Cookie sits out waiting for me but this is not a random or time-synchronised event as my work timings are quite erratic. My wife tells me that Cookie is out in the courtyard waiting for my arrival many minutes before I actually reach. That means Cookie receives some signals of my impending arrival even when I am 10-15 kilometres away from home. I know few of you may attribute it to a superior sense of smell in dogs.
But, how do you explain the phenomenon of synchronicity – you are remembering someone and at that exact moment, he/she either arrives or you get a call/message from that person? Or why do you get particular “vibes” from persons – some instantly pulling you towards him/her and some make you recoil? Or why do you start getting a “hunch” that your loved one is in some kind of distress or danger despite that person being thousands of miles away? The sceptics amongst us will still attribute all to sheer coincidence and hence let me invoke some scientific experiments to prove my point that thoughts indeed travel and have tremendous power to manifest tangible outcomes.
Dr Masaru Emoto, a Japanese businessman, and author did some fascinating experiences on the effects on positive thoughts on water. The findings, which were mind-blowing, were later published as a bestselling book, ‘The Hidden Messages in Water’ in 2004. Emoto got a group of 2000 people in Tokyo to focus positive thoughts and intentions towards water samples which were kept inside an electromagnetically shielded room in California. The structure and the geometric shape of water crystals got changed to a more aesthetic one from the normal structure, supposedly due to the collective positive thoughts and intentions of people sitting thousands of miles away.
Dr Emoto did further experiments by sticking the words ‘Thank You’ and ‘You Make Me Sick; I Will Kill You’ on two different mineral water bottles. The water crystals in the first sample reorganised themselves in a beautiful and aesthetic shape while in the other sample no crystals got formed and the structure became chaotic and fragmented. This negative impact was also observed when heavy metal music was played or words like “Adolf Hitler” were spoken or written on the bottle. That was not all – when the researchers mixed fragrant floral oil to the water samples, the crystals took the shape of the flower from which the oil was extracted. The outcome is stunning and shows the power of thoughts – positive or negative on an inert substance like water. Since our bodies are nearly 70% water, would such experiments work on living beings too? Let’s find out.
The Maharishi Effect. In 1960, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi predicted that one percent of a population practising the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique would produce measurable improvements in the quality of life of the entire population. This was confirmed by scientific research in 1976 when it was found out that when 1% of the community practised TM, the crime rate went down by 16%. Later, Mahesh Yogi devised the TM – Sidhi programme which resulted in even more positive results. Between 2007 to 2010, when the TM-Sidhi technique was practised on a mass scale, the US national homicide rate and the urban violent crime rate fell considerably – by 21.2% in the former and 18.5% in the latter case as relative to the base years of 2002-2006. What was even more surprising was that this period of the research coincided with a severe recession which in the past had raised the crime rates considerably.
The results are clear – the positive collective consciousness of a miniscule percentage of the population (square root of 1% of the total US population i.e., 1725 participants in this experiment) can bring about positive outcomes for the entire population. The report, ‘Societal Violence and Collective Consciousness: Reduction of US Homicide and Urban Violent Crime Rates’ was later published in 2016 and is available on the internet. However, in India, we intuitively understand the power of prayers – individual or collective, and now we have scientific proof too.
PEAR Study. The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) lab was founded in 1979 to study the ability of consciousness (another word for our thoughts) to influence physical processes. The experiments were continued over nearly 30 years and the programme was closed down in 2007. The study focused on the anomalous impact the mind seemed to have on physical devices including Electronic Random Event Generators (REGs) and remote perception i.e. the ability of a person to perceive information that should be inaccessible through the standard senses. The results of the study suggested that human intentions (read thoughts) can directly influence the physical world in a small but significant way.
But, an intentional shift in our thoughts and consciousness towards positive thoughts, will attract positive thoughts to us. These ‘fortified’ thoughts are nothing but energy and will coalesce to form matter – the tangible outcomes that we may desire.
We have already established that thought waves are a mix of electromagnetic and biochemical waves. Hence, the electric impulses of thoughts have magnetic properties. Also, since our mind can create thoughts at different frequencies, it can attract thoughts which are vibrating at same/similar frequencies. So, we can conceive our mind to be an antenna which is continuously transmitting electromagnetic signals (our thoughts) and receiving similar thoughts which are out there in the universe. Remember that thought is energy and energy can’t be created or destroyed, it merely changes to matter. So, every thought ever created by anyone is ‘out there’ waiting to be picked up by another thought which is oscillating at the same frequency.
It is quite akin to the concept of radio transmission and reception. The radio waves of various frequencies (which are also electromagnetic waves) are present in the atmosphere and we can receive these waves by tuning our receiver antenna to that frequency. So, if we want to hear tragic and melancholy numbers, we tune our radio antenna accordingly. But with only a minor shift in the tuning of our receiver, we start catching peppy, happy and energetic music. Is the same concept not applicable to our thoughts? If we create sad and pessimistic thoughts in our mind, they are bound to attract similar thoughts from the universe. But, an intentional shift in our thoughts and consciousness towards positive thoughts, will attract positive thoughts to us. These ‘fortified’ thoughts are nothing but energy and will coalesce to form matte r- the tangible outcomes that we may desire.
I guess that all the three scientific studies, empirical research data and the arguments put forth in this post prove that our thoughts have the power to not only influence our own emotions, which is pretty obvious but also affect others – both living and non-living. Also, thoughts do travel beyond our minds and shape the environment by attracting similar thoughts. A shift in our thoughts or consciousness thus has the power to attract similar thoughts to us – positive or negative.
In the next and final post of this series we will endeavour to answer the tantalising question – can these positive or negative thoughts manifest positive and negative outcomes in life?
